Shofu Inc. was founded in 1922 as SHOFU Dental Mfg. & Co. by Kajo Shofu, who was from the third generation of the Shofu family in the ceramic industry. He was an entrepreneur, as well as researcher, and founded the company with the aim of producing high-quality porcelain teeth for the local market in Japan, as up to that time Japan's economy largely depended on products imported from overseas
With the aid of the research and development department Kajo Shofu once again turned his attention to the ceramic technology as it existed at the time and successfully started with the development and production of the first high-quality porcelain teeth ever to be produced in Japan. Since the founding of the company, SHOFU has dedicated itself completely to the research and development of new products for dentistry, and this aim still characterises the spirit of the company.
In 1983, that is to say 60 years after the company was founded, SHOFU Dental Mfg. & Co. was no longer known only as a manufacturer of porcelain teeth, but had already established itself successfully in the dental market with a wide range of products. At this time SHOFU had already achieved an international presence in the market through the founding of SHOFU Dental Corporation-USA, SHOFU Dental GmbH-Deutschland and SHOFU Dental Singapore Pte. Ltd. With a wide range of high-quality products for the dental market, SHOFU was now represented in every continent.
This was the right time for Kajo Shofu, a member of the fifth SHOFU generation, to carry out a reorganisation of the company. He planned a new management strategy for SHOFU Inc. and from that moment SHOFU traded under the company name SHOFU Inc., Kyoto. The new management direction had already had its effect in November 1989: SHOFU Inc. was the first dental company to be listed on the stock markets in Osaka and Kyoto.
The highest product quality was then and is now one of the most important principles guiding the company.
In 1997 SHOFU Inc. Kyoto was CE certified, but not only to the international quality standard ISO 9001, but also to the European standard EN 46001 and the MDD standard for the medical field, which require additional safety checks for the manufacture of dental materials. Adherence to these standards is a guarantee for the high standard of quality for SHOFU products and their international recognition.
