Accurate intraoral shade determination with the SHOFU GUMY-V gingiva-coloured shade tab holder

You know the situation: You took the shade as meticulously as always. And though the shade tab and the neighbouring tooth matched, the restoration looked lifeless when seated: too little red, too little chroma. The reason is quite often an optical illusion. It is caused by the fact that we usually assess the tabs of the shade guide without the pink gum tissues, against the dark background of the oral cavity. This leads to incorrect decisions in shade determination, which will not (or cannot) be corrected when the restoration is made in the laboratory.

The SHOFU GUMY-V gingiva-coloured shade tab holder allows you to simulate this gum effect very well. It…

  • makes tooth shade determination objective
  • improves communication on tooth shades between dentist and technician
  • reduces misunderstandings and time-intensive redoing and reworking.

In other words, the GUMY-V effectively helps you to accurately determine tooth shades intraorally, using the VITA Classical A1-D4 shade guide, and avoid a greyish effect or too little chroma in the final restoration.

Who benefits from SHOFU GUMY-V?

The GUMY-V is suitable for both dental clinicians wishing to determine the tooth shade chairside and play it safe, and dental technicians offering shade taking, e.g. for anterior crowns, as a service to the dentists they work with.

GUMY-V is very easy to use: Select the GUMY-V that matches the patient’s gum colour – determine the tooth shade without the gingiva – double-check with the gingiva-coloured GUMY-V – correct the shade – that’s it!

Digital photo documentation with the EyeSpecial C-V

In addition to visual shade matching with shade guide and GUMY-V, careful photo documentation is advisable. Photographic comparison of the natural tooth shade with the corresponding shade tabs provides more information. Besides, the dental technician receives information on the shape and special characteristics of the tooth, such as enamel cracks or white spots.

The EyeSpecial C-V dental camera features a special “Isolate Shade” mode for photo documentation with and without the gingiva. In this mode, up to three images are taken, showing…

  • the situation in true colours
  • the situation with automatic masking of the gingival areas
  • the situation in black and white to assess the brightness.

Just select this mode – and the camera does the rest for you. This is a real added value for you and the cooperation with your dental laboratory.
